China Hard Plastic Coated Steel Ball Suppliers
Hard Plastic Coated Steel Balls: Steel Core + PP Coating, .43 / .50 / .68 Cal & 7–40 mm Custom
A plastic coated steel ball is a solid steel core encapsulated in a plastic shell, most commonly polypropylene (PP). The steel core supplies mass, roundness and mechanical strength; the coating sets the final outer diameter, colour and surface condition, and separates the steel from the environment. The two parts are specified independently, which is what makes this construction usable where a bare steel ball would corrode, mark the equipment, or weigh too much.
Ningyang Xinxin Stainless Steel Ball Manufacture Co., Ltd. produces plastic coated steel balls in two owned factories totalling 15,000 m² with more than 250 machines, backed by ISO, SGS, ROHS and REACH certificates plus FDA documentation. Stock sizes cover .43 cal (10.92 mm), .50 cal (12.7 mm) and .68 cal (17.27 mm) reusable training balls; non-standard outer diameters from 7 mm to 40 mm are produced to drawing.
What the Two-Part Construction Does
A solid plastic ball gives you a plastic surface but plastic-only weight. A bare steel ball gives you weight and hardness but an exposed, corrodible, marking surface. A plastic coated steel ball splits the two functions:
The steel core determines unit mass, moment of inertia and dimensional stability. It is machined and ground round first, so the roundness of the finished ball is inherited from the metal, not the polymer.
The plastic coating determines the outer diameter, colour, chemical resistance and the surface that actually contacts the barrel, track or valve seat. It also damps noise and prevents metal transfer onto the mating part.
Because weight and outer diameter are decoupled, a single outer size can be supplied at several unit weights simply by changing core diameter or core material.

Steel Core Options
| Core material | Typical grade | Why it is chosen | Trade-off |
| Carbon steel | Low-carbon, ground & polished | Lowest cost per gram of mass; highest weight for a given core diameter | Will rust if the coating is breached |
| Stainless steel | 201 | Rust-resistant in humid storage and wash-down areas | Lower density than carbon steel |
| Bearing steel | GCr15 / AISI 52100 | Highest hardness and dimensional stability; best roundness after hardening | Highest material cost |
Coating Options
| Coating | Status | Characteristics |
| PP (polypropylene) | Standard, in production | Density ≈ 0.90–0.91 g/cm³; good chemical resistance to acids, bases and most solvents; low water absorption; low surface friction; opaque, pigmented to order |
| ABS / other engineering resins | On request | Higher impact resistance or a different surface feel; larger minimum order quantities apply |
Coating wall thickness is a calculated value, not a catalogue value: it follows from the required outer diameter, the target unit weight and the core diameter selected. State the first two and the core/coating split is solved for you.
